The Malawi Communications Regulatory Authority (MACRA) has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting consumer rights, especially in the face of growing digital threats.
Speaking during the World Consumer Rights Day commemoration held on Tuesday at Deira Lodge in Mchinji, MACRA Board Member Stella Chuthi called on consumers to speak out when they face unfair treatment from service providers such as Airtel Malawi and Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM).
“We want consumers to know that MACRA is here to defend their rights. If you’ve been wronged by a service provider, report it. We cannot act if we do not know,” Chuthi said.
She emphasized that consumer empowerment begins with knowledge and responsible use of digital platforms.
“It is equally important that consumers avoid spreading misinformation. Knowing your rights also means understanding your responsibilities,” Chithi said.
Chuthi also noted that MACRA is prioritizing cybersecurity to protect users from the rising cases of online and mobile money fraud.
“We are strengthening our efforts on cybersecurity. No consumer should feel unsafe while transacting or engaging online,” she said.
The event, which was part of the global celebration of World Consumer Rights Day on March 15, was held under the theme “Fair and Safe Digital Spaces for Consumers.” And It attracted various stakeholders, including representatives from the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC), the ICT Association of Malawi, and members of the public.
CFTC Executive Director Lloyd Vincent Nkhoma stressed the importance of partnerships in safeguarding consumer interests.
“We are working closely with MACRA and other partners to curb digital fraud and ensure a fair marketplace for all Malawians,” said Nkhoma.
The commemoration served as a platform for dialogue and awareness, highlighting the need for stronger consumer protection mechanisms in the fast-evolving digital landscape.
